The Dallas Mavericks' Erick Dampier is going to be a different player this
season.

No, he's not going to average 12 points and 12 rebounds, which would match
career bests, although it won't be for lack of effort.

What Dampier will do, he promises, is change his demeanor and play with
passion that everybody can see.

It's not that he's worried about public perception. He's never been caught up
in what others think of him. But he wants to get emotional for himself and
his teammates.

"A lot of people say Damp is shy and reserved, which is true to some extent,"
he said. "But I'm going to take a more vocal role. It may be a step out of my

Dampier is different this season in other ways, too. He got married over the
summer, and he's finding Rick Carlisle's lively offense is a bit more
center-friendly than Avery Johnson's plodding style was.

per game last season.

It was Johnson who lobbied Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and then-coach Don
Nelson to sign Dampier in 2004. But when Johnson took over as coach, the
synergy between him and Dampier evaporated.

Now Dampier is revived, as evidenced by the preseason game Thursday in
Chicago. Late in the first quarter, the Mavericks took a missed Bulls shot
and got the ball to Jason Kidd, and everybody raced downcourt. Dampier was
ahead of Kidd, who rewarded the effort with a pass that gave Dampier an easy
slam.

Fans, media and some of his peers have called Dampier's time with the
Mavericks disappointing. But as he enters his fifth season with them, that
verdict still isn't in.

When he signed his seven-year, $63 million deal in '04, Dampier was viewed as
untradeable. That has changed. With the contract down to two years, plus a
partly guaranteed option, the Mavericks routinely get interest from other
teams about Dampier. None of those calls has produced trade talk to their
liking. And Carlisle's system requires Dampier's bulk in the middle.

Carlisle believes size wins championships.

he hasn't been a dominant part of those teams' offenses in large part because
of personnel," Carlisle said. "Here, there's a lot of guys who surround him
who are 'star' type guys. So you're never going to get the kind of touches or
offensive focus that maybe he would in a different situation."

No matter what this season brings, Dampier says he still won't worry about
how anybody perceives him. And by no means does he regret coming to Dallas.

"We've been in the playoffs every year," he said, mentioning the Mavs' trip
to the Finals in 2006 and their 67 wins in 2007. "So I think it's been a
great deal for me and the team."
