LA CROSSE, Wis. – In an effort to get younger and more athletic, the
Mavericks on Friday traded for Indiana's Shawne Williams, betting that the
6-9 forward can put a troubled start to his NBA career behind him.

And if it's not, Williams' tenure will not last. The Mavericks acquired him
for 36-year-old Eddie Jones, second-round draft choices next summer and in

It's a steep price to pay for potential, especially potential with a history
of controversy. Williams has had three incidents with police over the last 14
months. It is those problems that led the Pacers to trade the third-year
player. As the 17th overall pick of the 2006 draft, his talent was not an
issue, Pacers president Larry Bird said Friday.

In February, a murder suspect was found at Williams' home. Then in July,

He averaged 6.7 points and 2.7 rebounds last season in 65 games, logging 14.9

Carlisle coached Williams in 2006-07 at Indiana and has always liked the
skill set that the athletic forward has.

our young talent. I believe he has the ability to help us some this year. But
